Congressman Meuser Bill to Rename Post Office in Lebanon Honoring Fallen Police Officer Signed into Law

May 13, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congressman Dan Meuser (PA-09) announced that legislation he introduced, H.R. 3865, was signed into law by President Joe Biden. The bill renames the post office at 101 South 8th Street in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, as the "Lieutenant William D. Lebo Post Office Building.” This announcement coincides with National Police Week, which runs from Sunday, May 12, through Saturday, May 18.

H.R. 3865 was cosponsored by Pennsylvania’s entire House delegation. The legislation received overwhelming bipartisan support, passing unanimously in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Lt. William D. Lebo of the Lebanon City Police Department tragically lost his life in the line of duty on March 31, 2022, while responding to a domestic-related burglary incident. Lt. Lebo was a 40-year veteran of the Lebanon Police Department and was just 30 days from retirement at the time of his passing.

Congressman Dan Meuser said, “Lt. Lebo's four decades of service stand as a testament to his profound commitment to the City of Lebanon. Renaming the post office in his beloved hometown will serve as a lasting tribute to his extraordinary life and legacy of service. This legislation was a small gesture compared to the enormity of Lt. Lebo’s contributions to his community. I thank my colleagues in the House and Senate for unanimously supporting this effort. Together, we honor the memory of a dedicated public servant whose indelible mark on the Lebanon community will be remembered for generations to come.”

Lora Lebo, wife of Lt. William Lebo, said, “William’s mother and I are so incredibly happy to have a permanent reminder to the community of his 40 years of service and his life-long commitment to Lebanon County. We hope that it will serve as a reminder that police are here to protect us, and each of them dedicate their lives to serving the public.”

Lebanon County District Attorney Pier Hess Graf said, "Just over two years ago Lt. William Lebo sacrificed his life in the line of duty.  He gave his life in exchange for the safety of his fellow officers; no braver or greater sacrifice exists within law enforcement.  We are forever grateful to Congressman Daniel Meuser and his staff for their efforts to rename the Lt. William D. Lebo Memorial Post Office and keep the Lieutenant's name alive.  Our community owes a debt to Lt. Lebo which can never be repaid."

Mayor Sherry Capello said, “Lt. William Lebo paid the ultimate sacrifice for his community.  While renaming a post office could never fully repay this sacrifice, it will serve to honor his legacy of service to the City of Lebanon.”

Police Chief Bret Fisher said, “Renaming the Lebanon Post Office after Lt. Lebo is a fitting tribute to his 40+ year long career with the Lebanon Police Department.”

A dedication ceremony will be planned in coordination with the Lebo family. Details regarding the event will be released in the near future.
