Congressman Meuser Secures $2.7 Million for Johnston Street Bridge Replacement in Susquehanna County

WASHINGTON, D.C.— Today, Congressman Dan Meuser (PA-09) issued the below statement after securing $2,700,000 in federal funding to replace the deteriorating single-lane Johnston Street Bridge in New Milford Borough. The funding was included in FY24 Appropriations legislation recently signed into law.
Constructed in 1913, this steel bridge sits near the beginning of Johnston Street, a dead-end road within the borough. A 2019 bridge inspection highlighted numerous areas of deterioration, prompting the borough to carry out recommended repairs. However, a subsequent inspection in June 2022 revealed further deterioration, necessitating additional repairs to maintain bridge functionality. These repairs include reducing the weight limit to 4 tons, which poses significant restrictions for heavier vehicles such as ambulances, fire trucks, school buses, and delivery trucks. The failure of this bridge would leave residents on the dead-end side completely disconnected from the rest of the community, underscoring the urgency of its replacement.
Congressman Dan Meuser said, "I am happy to have secured $2.7 million for the replacement of the Johnston Street bridge on behalf of New Milford Borough in Susquehanna County. The current state of the bridge is severely deteriorated, posing significant safety risks to residents. This federal Community Funding Project will help ensure the safety and mobility of borough residents. Without a functional bridge, members of the community would face considerable challenges in accessing essential services and navigating their daily lives. This investment will have a beneficial impact on all who call New Milford Borough home."
State Senator Lisa Baker (PA-20th) said, “This announcement of federal funding is great news for community hopes for the ultimate solution of a bridge replacement. The need for a safer bridge with greater capacity has long been recognized. The mayor, council, and area residents have engaged in effective advocacy and planning, essential steps in bringing about the progress coming into view. This new money will build upon the state funds we have secured for the engineering and design phases, and the emergency money to forestall weight restrictions or a shutdown.”
State Representative Jonathan Fritz (PA-111th) said, “A terrific example of officials using their power for good and coming to the rescue of a community in Susquehanna County. Sincere thanks to Congressman Meuser for his leadership and dedication in vying for these dollars. Our community shines thanks to officials that care and work hard to improve lives.”
Donna Cosmello, New Milford Borough Councilwoman, said, “On behalf of the New Milford Borough and the families living on Johnston St., we would like to take this opportunity to thank Congressman Meuser for helping to secure $2.7 million dollars needed to replace a failing bridge in our borough. This contribution will assure our ability to replace the bridge and help ensure emergency vehicles have quick access to residents on Johnston St.”
