Meuser Announces $2.8 Million in Federal Grants for PA-09 Fire Departments

October 7, 2026

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congressman Dan Meuser (PA-09) announced that the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded nearly $2.8 million in federal grants to eleven fire departments across Pennsylvania’s Ninth Congressional District through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program.

The projects funded through these grants will provide professional training, personal protective equipment, modifications to facilities, firefighting and emergency response apparatus, including fire trucks, and supplies that support firefighting and non-affiliated EMS operations and safety.

“In addition to being the first to respond when fires, accidents, and disasters threaten lives and property, firefighters also provide assistance during medical emergencies, rescue operations, and other dangerous situations,” said Congressman Meuser. “Much of the funding for volunteer fire companies comes from residents through charity carnivals and other private donations. I’m pleased to play a role in securing funding for fire departments throughout our district to obtain the equipment, training, and facilities they need to do the job. Thank you to all our firefighters and everyone who supports their lifesaving work.”

The Fire Departments in Pennsylvania that will benefit from these funds include:

  • Mildred Volunteer Fire Department, Mildred, Sullivan County: $571,428
  • Friendship Fire Company of Englewood, Frackville, Schuylkill County: $534,952.72
  • Newmanstown Volunteer Fire Company, Newmanstown, Lebanon County: $428,346
  • Dorrance Township Volunteer Fire Department, Dorrance, Luzerne County: $342,346
  • Washington Fire Co. Number 1, Ashland, Schuylkill County: $328,571.42

  • William Penn Fire Co. 1, Shenandoah, Schuylkill County: $36,666.66
  • Sheppton-Oneida Fire Co., Sheppton, Schuylkill County: $18,428.57

About the AFG Program:

The AFG Program awards grants directly to fire departments, nonaffiliated Emergency Medical Services (EMS) organizations, and state fire training academies to enhance their ability to protect the health and safety of the public and first responder personnel. Using a competitive process informed by fire service subject-matter experts, the AFG Program awards grants to applicants whose requests best address its priorities.
