Meuser Statement on Ceasefire Agreement in Syria
WASHINGTON — Congressman Dan Meuser (PA-09) issued the following statement regarding the ceasefire agreement in Syria:
"This afternoon we received very good news resulting from meetings between Trump Administration diplomats and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan regarding a ceasefire agreement in Syria. The U.S. delegation included Vice President Mike Pence, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, National Security Advisor Robert O'Brien, and Ambassador James Jeffrey.
"The significant agreement is practical and in the best interest of the U.S. and its allies. Key provisions of the agreement include a 120-hour ceasefire to accommodate the withdrawal of the People's Protection Units (YPG) forces from northeast Syria and a combined U.S.-Turkey effort to prevent the reemergence of ISIS. Further, the U.S. will remove economic sanctions recently imposed on Turkey, but only once a permanent ceasefire is established.
"We will keep constituents informed pertaining to the ceasefire agreement moving forward. As President Ronald Reagan once said, ‘trust, but verify.' The Trump Administration and our military will continue to closely monitor this situation."
