MEUSER VOTES AGAINST D.C. STATEHOOD
POTTSVILLE, Pa. – Today, Congressman Dan Meuser (PA-9) voted against H.R. 51, the Washington, D.C. Admission Act and in support of the Republican Motion to Recommit to condition D.C. statehood on commonsense requirements:
"Our country faces unprecedented crises that demand immediate action from Congress. Instead of working towards solutions on pressing issues like calming the unrest in our communities and safely reopening our economy, House Democrats are focusing their efforts on granting statehood to Washington, D.C. Without support in the Senate or from the White House, this is another political messaging bill from Speaker Pelosi that will go nowhere.
"The Founding Fathers never intended for D.C. to become a state, and carefully crafted the Constitution so that the seat of the federal government would NOT be within a state. In response to this political posturing, I supported the Republican Motion to Recommit, which would condition D.C. statehood on requirements that would align the new ‘state' with policy values that reflect the rest of the nation. These include a guarantee of 2nd Amendment rights, protection of national monuments and memorials, continued participation in the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program, and a prohibition on D.C. from becoming a sanctuary city. House Democrats rejected these reasonable improvements to their bill, further exemplifying the purely partisan nature of their intentions.
"Let's stop wasting time and get to work on behalf of the American people."
