WILKES-BARRE — According to the FTC, Americans lost over $12 billion to scams in 2024 — a 25% increase from the previous year, U.S. Rep. Dan Meuser said on Thursday.

Meuser, R-Dallas, chairman of the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, convened a hearing titled “Fraud in Focus: Exposing Financial Threats to American Families.”

The congressman praised Kirk for his student outreach efforts, noting that he spent “years” traveling to college campuses to speak with young people despite opposition.

Meuser said Kirk “was taking people on, you know what, five years ago, six years ago, seven years ago. And he was going to the college campuses, he was being ridiculed, he was being protested, they didn’t want him there. Now he brings in 3,000 enthusiastic people. He’s taught them to think differently, to think outside of the echo chamber of what occurs … at some good schools.”

Rep. Dan Meuser (R-Pa.), chair of the House Financial Services subcommittee on oversight and investigations, said he plans to home in on the issue, ideally with legislation codifying the president’s executive order cracking down on “politicized or illegal debanking.”
